A screenfold book: it unfolds sideways. Scroll, swipe, or use the arrows.A screenfold book, lying open flat: read down.

skhul

One half of billionlightyearland, with bownz.

A multidisciplinary artist: visual art, video art, music, sculpture, and whatever else the idea turns out to need.

Deeply into Mesoamerican archaeology, the Maya above all, which is why this page is a book that unfolds sideways instead of a page that scrolls down.

visual art

Painting, drawing and image-making, on whatever surface will take it.

To be painted: works go on this leaf when skhul chooses them.

moving image

Video art: moving image made as art in its own right, not as an advert for something else.

The band's videos are all on the wall of TVs.

To be painted: skhul's own video works, listed here when he picks them.

sculpture

Sculpture: things with weight, that take up the room instead of hanging in it.

To be painted: photographs of the pieces go here.

why a codex

Maya scribes wrote books as long folded strips of bark paper coated in lime plaster, painted mostly in black and red and read panel by panel. Only four are known to survive.

The numbers on this page are bar-and-dot numerals: a dot is one, a bar is five, a shell is zero. Try it on the leaf numbers.

The date on the stela is the Long Count, which counts days from a starting point in August 3114 BC.

The glyph blocks and patterns here are drawn for this site, inspired by Maya writing, not copied from any real inscription.
