LEDGER CARD TX-007Cycle 9 / intake
Filed completeEight Hundred People Humming in a Language They Do Not Have
Twenty-three minutes. One note, held by what the ledger card describes, in handwriting that is not the Registrar’s, as eight hundred.
The number is the problem. Nobody at the Bureau counted. There is no census of open space, no roll, no method, and yet every clerk who has heard the recording has independently written down eight hundred, and one of them wrote it down before playback began.
Intake notes
The note is not quite one note. Somewhere in the middle of it, the pitch moves by an amount the Bureau’s instruments record as zero, and every listener records as upward.
“It is the sound of a very large number of people agreeing to be one thing for a while, and then quietly not.” — intake clerk, Desk 4
Handling
Fine for the terminal. Fine for headphones. Do not play in a room while counting the people in it.
